The Women Behind the Science: Meet ReproMed’s Embryology Team

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

When starting fertility treatment, most patients think about consultations, scans, and treatment milestones. What many don’t see is the science happening behind the scenes, and the embryologists who care for embryos during the earliest and most delicate stages of development.

This International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ReproMed is celebrating the women working in embryology and fertility science, whose expertise plays a vital role in IVF treatment and patient outcomes.

What does an embryologist do in IVF treatment?

Embryologists are highly trained scientists who work within the IVF laboratory. From the moment eggs and sperm are brought together, they carefully monitor embryo development, assess embryo quality, and maintain the precise laboratory conditions needed for healthy growth.

Embryology combines advanced reproductive science with careful observation and decision-making. Every step is guided by clinical expertise and evidence-based practice, ensuring embryos are cared for in the safest and most optimal environment possible.

For embryologist Jo, one of the most rewarding parts of the role is witnessing development at its earliest stage:

“I love watching embryos developing. I feel privileged to see each cell division, each stage of them. I love when they are growing correctly and we have good news for our patients.”

Behind every embryo is a team committed to accuracy, responsibility, and respect for the importance of each patient’s journey.

Women leading fertility science

Dina Duarte Embryologist at ReproMed

Women have played a significant role in advancing fertility science and reproductive medicine. Today, many embryology teams across fertility clinics, including ReproMed, are led by experienced female scientists whose work supports thousands of families every year.

For ReproMed embryologist Dina, the role reflects both the scientific precision and emotional significance of the work:

“Working in a bubble of science and miracle and being a part of someone’s deepest wish coming through.”

This balance between science and compassion sits at the heart of modern fertility care, where laboratory expertise supports deeply personal journeys.

The moments patients don’t always see

While patients may only meet embryologists briefly during treatment, their involvement continues throughout the entire process. Embryologists monitor development daily, collaborate closely with doctors and nurses, and share in the anticipation of results.

Jo describes the importance of the transfer moment, when science and patient experience come together:

“I love transferring embryos and showing them to patients on the screen, so they can also admire and meet their lovely future babies.”

The journey does not end there. For embryologists, outcomes are deeply personal too.

“I am constantly checking for pregnancy results and love when babies come visit us. It is a huge and warm reminder of the importance of what we do and at the same time a huge gift and reward for us as a team.”

Each successful outcome reflects a shared effort across the embryology and clinical teams.

“Every time we know a live birth has been born, we usually check who did what part of the long process, as we always divide the tasks — and you’d be surprised how many of us did a little bit of the process for every patient’s cycle.”

The role of the IVF laboratory in fertility care

While patients may not always meet the embryology team directly, embryologists work closely with fertility doctors, nurses, and fertility care coordinators to support every stage of treatment.

Their work includes:

  • Preparing eggs and sperm for fertilisation

  • Monitoring embryo development

  • Supporting embryo selection for transfer or freezing

  • Maintaining strict laboratory standards and quality control

This collaborative approach ensures that patients benefit from both advanced science and coordinated clinical care.

Inspiring the next generation of women in science

International Day of Women and Girls in Science highlights the importance of visibility and representation. By sharing the stories of women working in embryology and fertility science, we hope to inspire future generations to explore careers in science, healthcare, and research.

Science changes lives. In fertility care, it helps create them.
