TESE stands for Testicular Sperm Extraction
It is a surgical procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles in men who have a condition called azoospermia, which means they have no sperm present in their ejaculate.
This procedure can also be done in less frequent scenarios like men with very high DNA damage in their sperm.
There are two main types of azoospermia:
- Obstructive azoospermia: Obstructive azoospermia occurs when there is a blockage in the reproductive tract, preventing sperm from being ejaculated.
- Non-obstructive azoospermia: Non-obstructive azoospermia on the other hand, refers to cases where the testicles are not producing sperm or there is very low sperm production.
TESE is a very straightforward day proce- dure performed by one of our fertility specialists. It is performed under conscious sedation and local anesthetic.
It involves the removal of a small piece of testicular tissue through a minor incision in the scrotum. The collected tissue is then examined under a microscope by an embryologist to search for the presence of sperm. If viable sperm are found, they can be used to fertilise the eggs through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to help a couple achieve a pregnancy.
