Ovulation Induction – Timed Sexual Intercourse (TSI)

For couples who are struggling to conceive, ovulation induction with timed sexual intercourse (TSI) is a common fertility treatment that can help increase the chances of pregnancy. Let’s explore what ovulation induction with TSI involves, how it works, and who can benefit from this treatment.

What is ovulation induction with TSI?

Ovulation induction is a fertility treatment that involves using medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce one or more eggs. Timed sexual intercourse (TSI) involves having intercourse at the most fertile time of the menstrual cycle, which is typically around the time of ovulation. By combining ovulation induction with TSI, couples can increase the chances of pregnancy.

How does ovulation induction with TSI work?

Ovulation induction with TSI typically involves taking medication such as clomiphene citrate, Letrozole or Gonadotropins. These medications help to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. The medication is usually taken for five days, starting on day two to day five of the menstrual cycle.

After the medication has been taken, the female will undergo ultrasound monitoring to track the development of the follicles. Once the leading follicle is the correct size, a trigger shot of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is given to induce ovulation. The couple is then advised to have sexual intercourse every other day for the next five to six days, starting on the day of the hCG trigger shot.

Who can benefit from ovulation induction with TSI?

Ovulation induction with TSI is typically recommended for couples who have been trying to conceive for six to 12 months without success. It can also be used for women who have irregular menstrual cycles or who are not ovulating regularly.

Before starting ovulation induction with TSI, both partners will undergo a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of infertility. This may include a physical exam, blood tests, and a semen analysis.

In addition, ovulation induction with TSI may not be suitable for women with certain medical conditions, such as ovarian cysts.
